Edisto Charter Fishing

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

The dolphins are mating, the bald eagles are nesting, and the fish are biting. Be sure and bring a camera when you book a charter with Capt Bob! We run multiple spots on the creeks and rivers in and around Edisto Island, casting small plastic jigs, so we see tons of wildlife and catch the fish. We teach kids as young as 3 1/2 how to cast, retrieve, and fight the fish. I call it the diving board effect: “Mom, Mom, watch how far this one goes”. “And as often as not, the wife outfishes the husband”.
Our 22 foot boat will accomodate up to six people, so give us a call and “spend the best day of your vacation, FishingWithBob”

Scouting for Reds, Edisto Is, South Carolina

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Sat and Sun I did the “run and gun”, fishing structure I had never fished before or had never caught a fish on. Sat, for 5 hours, I pitched a Gulp 3 inch Shrimp (3/8th ounce pegged worm weight, 3/0 Owner Rigging Hook) on a GLoomis Flipping stick (MBR844C)and Shimano Curado with 50# Power Pro Braid. I would rather use 20# Seagar Invisex Flurocarbon, but I didn’t have a reel at Edisto spooled with that. I found two spots with a school of reds, each about 6-8 feet deep. Sunday, my should was hurting from recent surgery, so I used a GLoomis WCBR783S spinning rod and a Shimano 4000 Stradic spooled with 8# Ande Backcountry Mono. Once again, were I money fishing, I’d be using 8# Seagar Invisex. I threw the Gulp on an 1/8th ounce Owner ball jighead. Both days I used Natural and New Penny colors. The water was relatively clear and greenish, surprisingly, given the recent rains and wind. Four hours Sunday and only one bite…..a hoss I wish I had on the flipping stick, as he finally ran back into the structure and I couldn’t begin to turn him. Whether guiding, tournament, or pleasure fishing, this is what it takes for me to be even moderately successful. Those two new schools will come in real handy this year on my charters.

Edisto and the Ace Basin Redfish

Monday, April 4th, 2011

6 year old Trey with his 25 inch redfish caught while FishingWithBob

What a blessing our tremendous Redfish (Spottail Bass) population on the South Carolina coast is. The creeks and rivers in and around Edisto are loaded with schools of  these powerful fish.   You used to could gig, net, catch coolers full, and sell them, provided you had a $1.10 swimfish license.  The chef Paul Prudhomme came out with his Blackened Redfish receipt and the demand for this fish became so great, the spotter planes working with the net boats almost decimated the population.  All the coastal states designated the redfish a game fish, with possession and size limits.  And they rebounded!! Redfish have joined the ranks of bonefish, permit, and tarpon as premier game fish, especially OTF (on the fly).  South Carolina has become a destination for our one of a kind,  salt marsh sight fishing for them.  So grab your rod to experience the beauty and incredible wildlife of the ACE Basin and catch these awesome gamefish.  Hope to see you on the water.    FishingWithBob  (803)300-2780

Being a Better Fisherman (Person)

Monday, March 14th, 2011

From the “Science of the Mind”:
Our searches for Truth will be much like those of the mythic knights searching for the Holy Grail. No one may follow the path of another, for it rolls up behind the searcher and disappears. In other words, one’s individual search will always
belong uniquely to that person. We may share insights and try to
speak of experiences, but we may not lend these to another. They
cannot be captured by anyone but the seeker. Best we should enjoy
the road, experience the rises and falls of an expanding consciousness,
and become resolute in knowing that we shall never know a
final resolution.

“The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.”

Cranky Reds

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

While the folks at DNR are still up in the air as to whether or not we had a winter trout kill, I can attest, “No so for the redfish!” They are on the flats and deeper water structure and as healthy as ever. One of my favorite ways to find the structure fish is to run the trolling motor against the current on the outside bends of curves in the creeks and rivers. My arsenal consist of two baitcasting rods, one with a shallow running crankbait, the other with a deeper running one, both tied on to 15 pound flurocarbon line. The bills on the crankbaits deflect off the structure, often creating a “reaction bite”. Flurocarbon line is abrasion restistant, giving you a chance to hang on to that monster until he decides to move out to deeper water. This is a day of “one thousand casts”, but when you find them, they are there for a reason and will be there again and again. This is how you find the spot no one else knows about. Give Capt Bob a call to explore the fishing mysteries of Ediso Island. “If you take care of Nature, Nature will take care of you.” Bob Sanders

Positive Growth

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Taken from “Science of the Mind:

All Life is conspiring to make you
a finer and happier person.
Raymond Charles Barker
The individualization of the Universal
comes to a point in the personal….

Nature is such a wonderful teacher. Its native wisdom tells it when
to scale back, take things easy, realign, and recuperate so that when
earth’s growing season is front and center, nature is good to go.
Nature knows not to force anything. It knows to let things unfold
where they will as they will. The flower buds off to one side or the
seeds stuck in a crack in the sidewalk do not get all upset because
they are not in some treasured position in the garden. They attend
only to their prime directive, which is to grow and blossom as fully
as possible.
Infinite wisdom and possibility lie within all life, and life forms
respond according to their capacities to receive. The things of the world
will grow and expand as much or as little as their circumstances will
allow. On the other hand, humanity, in which nature’s God sees Its
apex, can not only grow into a condition, but also can change it if this
condition is greatly limiting. In this crowning self-awareness—so much
a part of the human existence—is where true resurrection really lies.
There is a part of us that can be made new again and again and again.
It makes no difference whether we are young or old. Because of our
oneness with Eternal Being, if we choose to be alive to what is within
us, we are always looking at springtime.
affirmation
I am a revealer of Truth every day, every hour, every minute.
Naturally, I am an opening through which God is made manifest.
Something new is making its way into my awareness right now. I
am becoming conscious of a delightful springtime emerging in my
thoughts.

South Carolina Hunting Land

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Fran, http://www.doggrell.com and I have been in Memphis, she for photography shoots and me as her setup support and to duck hunt. I have talked with a number of bankers, real estate investors, etc as I am looking for duck properties in Arkansas for several clients. The general consensus is there is no better place to invest money than a recreational property. A house at the beach to enjoy with potential rental income, an Arkansas duck property with farming income and duck hunting for your family, friends and clients (write off), or a hunting property in South Carolina (where we have the longest deer season in the US) with timber value and farming income can be more attractive than a stock portfolio. A lot of properties are on the market and it is very possible to hear, “He stole that”. Banks are ready to help you finance to get inventory off of their books. Owners are willing to finance. Now is a great time to purchase and enjoy that dream property…..and when our economy turns around, end up with a real asset.

Preparation

Friday, January 21st, 2011

February is normally thought of as a month to throw another log on the fire, dream about fishing come spring, and maybe take the reels to Haddrell’s to be cleaned. In reality, February is the best month to do your scouting, and yes even catch a few fish. With the water temps in the 40′s, the plankton is gone; and, the water is generally crystal clear. Idling around the oyster bars and on the edge of flats, wearing your polarized glasses, you will eventually find the fish. They will be lethargic and fairly hard to catch, but they will probably be in the same area the rest of the year. So study your maps; and, the next warm day, load up the family and go cruising – or for a winter fishing adventure call FishingWithBob at 803-300-2780. Bundle up and load up for a great day on the water. It could pay off in a big way.

Trout and Redfish Cold Water Kills?

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

The following musing is from my friend and fishing cohart, David Fladd. Ron Davis and I talked about this yesterday, and he has noticed there are way less trout on the flats after the last water temp drop than this time last year. Hopefully the last cold spell moved them to deep water. David writes:
Here is an interesting article on Redfish cold water tolerance
http://agcj.tamu.edu/404/port/WhitwellRB.pdf

In this study, the first fish died when the water reached 41F. Most of the mortality occurred at 38F.

Here is the USGS water temp for the Wando near the 526 bridge, measured for the last 30 days. The temp is currently below 7C. You can see the dip after Christmas and it has really nosedived with the current snap

For reference:
41F = 5.0C
38F = 3.3C

Of course, trout are less tolerant. I read that more than one fish kill in a season is rare because a cold snap will signal the trout to move to deep water and they will tend to overwinter there. Thats interesting – maybe the Christmas cold snap sent them deep? Also, that sudden drops are more likely to cause fish kills and I would guess that the drops we have seen have not been terribly sudden(?)

Anyway, I found these doing my own research, and thought others might find it informative.

Buying An Arkansas Duck Property

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

In this market, few things seem to be a good investment. An Arkansas duck property is one, as they are holding, even increasing their value.
I am having the best time finding a duck property for a Memphis client. As Fran is from Memphis, and we lived in Arkansas for eight years, I have a lot of contacts in Arkansas. Because of the economy, properties are being sold, so it is possible to get in at an attractive price. Depending upon the layout, 300 to 500 acres would be a good minimum, to have a topnotch duck property that you can hunt almost every day. Can you say rest pond? A great way to do this, and to defray yearly operating costs, is to put together a group, as a club. Some of the clubs I am lucky enough to hunt have been in existence since the early 1900′s. They have a few key rules and it works! If a duck property in Arkansas is your dream then give me a call Bob
