I am planting only heirloom seeds in my garden, in order to be able to saved viable seeds. My source is <http://www.bountifulgardens.org/> I am impressed with the quality and price of their seeds and with their support.
The following is an excerpt from an email response to a question I had.
Heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, because they are usually older varieties from before hybrids were popular. Organic doesn’t refer to that at all; a seed can be certified organic and can be a hybrid. All of our seeds, no matter the source, are all open-pollinated, so you can save seed from them. If you want to save seed, you need to buy open-pollinated varieties, not hybrids. We do not carry any hybrids. Hybrids usually produce viable seeds, but the seeds will not produce plants the same as the parents.
